chiroacademy 833 Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 I was in Columbia house record subscription 40 years ago. Lol

Also, I was in the Club back about 40 years ago, and If I remember the vinyl was not 180 grain vinyl and was thin and prone to warpage. They were very flexible and flimsy.
UncleMeat 1,173 Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 I'm thinking the new "ColumbiaHouse" is not going to have the same deals as there were when you cut out stickers of your 12 records for 'free' with only 7 more to buy (with jacked up shipping/handling fees). They will probably be targeting the audiophile market who are paying premium prices for re-pressed vinyl these days.
Ar9Jim 6,514 Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 About age 12 I joined Columbia house.. Boy was my mom surprised when all those records showed up, along with the commitment to buy more. I got the free ones, and mom got the contract! Sorry mom.
jldeni 439 Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 I, also, was a member of Columbia record club about 40 years ago. It was a great way to bolster your record collection with lots of "free" deals. However, I also remember that the vinyl was substandard to what you could get in the stores. Recordings were sometimes distorted or the record would have a skip. Also - their customer service was not very good at responding to complaints and they could never actually bill correctly. Of course, it's a whole new world now and I would hope a whole new company - if they are, in fact, coming back.
trav0810 586 Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 I remember the same kind of experience with Columbia. The pressings were not quality and the customer service sucked. But today's record buyer is a different demographic. People that purchase albums now are expecting a certain level of quality. They aren't just buying LP's because they are the common medium. Maybe this will force the production to a higher standard.

I was looking for the website URL ownership information. GoDaddy is the ISP and shows up in California. It is also on the main page of columbiahouse.com. 1

Technically you were a minor, so there was no contract. Hindsight, not very beneficial I know LOL.
chiroacademy 833 Posted December 26, 2015 Posted December 26, 2015 I would join in a heart beat if the quality is good. I try to buy only 180 gram vinyl. I don't want flimsy warped crap

UncleMeat 1,173 Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 The industry has realized that the only buyers of vinyl are the audiophiles with money to spend on them. The reissue of vinyl records at rediculous high prices is the only thing thing that has created a fad (highly profitable for the record companies). Bring back direct marketing and profits go even higher for the record companies.
zumbini 6,150 Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/columbia-house-to-relaunch-as-vinyl-subscription-service-in-2016-20151224Rolling Stone apparently thinks vinyl is a "fad." Yeah, just another 100 year long fad! While vinyl record sales have risen steadily, they are a drop in the bucket of mid-70's sales, and a small % of total music dollars. 1
soulofsound 40 Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 Wow !Its been a long time ago that joined the club.

nascar03 25 Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I remember a Leave It To Beaver episode dealing with him joining a record club. He got a lot of records for a penny....then Ward had to fix it....lol I didn't join back then and probably won't now. graham
Sagamore2007 71 Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Talking about quality vinyl---I just had to bring up a link to a great fellow located here in Salina for the last 30+years. Several interesting Videos if you have the time. http://www.qualityrecordpressings.com/index.cfm?go=video Quite an operation from Studio, Production, Pressing. A good investment in the buyers dollars for their products when you witness the time and effort in the quality they are creating and/or reproducing. Witness Chad at Acoustic Sounds.
Rockster2U 668 Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 The real trick back in the day was to join, making sure you also got your two bonus albums (14 total on their best promotional offer), buy a few monthly offerings and then quit. Take a break for a couple of months and join all over again - sleezy? - yes, but it worked. I guess the only way to rationalize this was that they didn't pay any royalties on Record Club sales but admittedly, it was still a pretty sleezy trick.
4krow 6,630 Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I joined a coffee of the month club...wonder if cat houses have a similar offer.
Chuck 74 Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I want to get in on the cat house offer I take my fourteen free ones then drop out, I don't think they could send the debt collectors after you
