A very valid question... I strongly believe one should base their speaker selection on their listening area. What sounds terrific in a showroom, that has been designed and treated perfectly, will not sound the same in your listening area. I listened to some amazing systems at CF. The right speaker would have a side wall (below a large glass window) , the left speaker would be open to the room... This is not ideal yet listeners claimed to hear "imaging" and all of the other "critical listening" adjectives. My listening area is not ideal. I do not have a long flat wall with corresponding side walls. (so 901's are out)

This may not be the solution you’re looking for but I run two audio systems with one preamp. The Parasound Halo P5 is a decent unit that has both an adjustable high pass filter and bass management controls. I split the pre outs to two systems: M-500t paired with Sunfire CRM2’s (the P5 allows me to only pass 100hz+ to The Sunfires) Carver 350’s paired with Klipsch Heresy IIIs (I run these full range) I run a Sunfire Subrosa with each system.

Chas, Welcome to the site! Your friend’s generosity may end up costing you thousands of dollars. One Carver piece is usually followed by the desire for more! Where are you located? itch -

I think about him daily! I really hope someone has an answer. -
Welcome to the site prISM !!!! You will find a wealth of knowledge on this site. Great people too. Its been unusually slow the past few months around here. Don’t get frustrated if you don’t see many responses. Many of the members have “extra” equipment and may be able to satisfy your need for a Carver foundation. Most of this vintage gear will have to be refreshed.... the internals need new capacitors etc. The technicians here do many types of modifications as well. What speakers are you thinking about driving? Where are you from? Itch

Who uses which media for primary listening and why?
itchitch replied to halfbaked's topic in Physical digital
That looks like a nice solution. I just burned ONE song from a CD in AIFF and it was 59.6MB @ 1411 kbps. The Vault 2 has a 2TB hard drive = 33K songs .... -

I still have all of my CDs - This will be a winter project. I will also need to buy the Apple SuperDrive in that new iMac's don't include them anymore. I ran across a preowned Wyred4Sound modified Sonos Connect at TMR Audio here in Denver. I highly recommend the upgrade: Wyred 4 Sound Sonos Upgrade -
Who uses which media for primary listening and why?

I have enjoyed reading what has been shared on this thread so far.... The truth is - I have become lazy - at a cost. Years ago I ripped all of my CD's (400+) in to iTunes. This was when storage was expensive. Unfortunately they were all at a lower quality.... hindsight blows. When I first hooked up my turntable I was excited... spinning records like the old days! I forgot what a pita it was to skip a song on the album.... The sound was nostalgic, I even remembered exactly in a song where to one "pop" was. I was encouraged by my teenage children to subscribe to Spotify Family. I am happy that I did. The iPhone interface is slick and the song database is huge. I rediscovered Groups that I forgot I liked. I could never justify buying the album of the "one hit wonder" groups... now easily accessible through this service. So here I am - amazing hardware and low res sources - all without having to move from my couch! If you have read this far in to my reply, I suggest you read the article I have linked. It's a bit dated (and a long read) but does explain WHY my AMAZING system sounds meh to me right now. Itch WHAT DATA COMPRESSION DOES TO YOUR MUSIC -

I only used the Sunfire for illustration purposes. Dom... it was an active sub question. Thanks
-
Dom, I have been looking at some local ads for used subs. One of them only had LFE and speaker level inputs. I had always been curious about this method of connection. Another had only speaker level connections but had a variable high pass feature. Thanks! (Dom autocorrects to DoN ?)

Thank Wayne!
