So I get a call yesterday from a buddy who's inserted himself into a widow's estate reduction.  He says "Are you still into stereos and big speakers?"  Well I think we all know how I answered that question - So lunch finds he and I on a trip about 30 miles out of town to a very nice house in the country - This is looking good!

When we get to the house, the guy meets us outside, and leads us to a 60 x 60 shop/airplane hanger.  Set between the studs, about 5 feet off the floor, are a pair of vintage Polk SDA SRS speakers.  Mouth watering, I strugle to remain indiferent.  We chat a bit, and settle on $500 for the speakers, and the NAD component system running them.  I think I got a great deal - Polk interconnect cable included, and a 12 foot pair of Kimber 8VS speker cable.

The speakers are a little rough - I may need to re-finish the grill cloth.  I also need to make new top and bottom wood plates - they are a bit rough - they look to be walnut...?

Also, what would be the best way to clean a little bit of dust off the slightly tacky 6.5" drivers?

Thanks for looking guys -

Ps - Did we ever firm up the "speaker whore" medal...? ;-)

These are wonderful speakers and a steal at that price. Now starts the slippery slope of modding the crossovers and updating the tweeters...

Don't let anybody tell you anything different - you deserve this Mark. After all that you did re: that reference CD set and all the manuals to mention just a couple of things, enjoy the fruits of your labors - yes sir, in my book, you deserve it.

What's the best way to clean dust off the "tacky" surface of the 6.5" drivers?

Also, do you have a link to the "upgrades" that people do to these?

Thanks:-)

Around here, I'm lucky to find something made by Emerson. Nice score!

It's usually pretty slim pickings out here too - been pretty lucky this past year though: 2 sets of kappa 9s, a set of AL IIIs, AL Silvers, and now the SRS pair. 10 hours was the longest round trip (for the IIIs).

Come to think of it, it's probably GOOD I don't live on the east coast, or in California...;-)

Thanks bro - I always said, it's better to be lucky than good;-)

Mark, great score. Search on the Polk forum "windex". I have not needed to use it but remember reading. Join the forum. There is a ton of information about upgrading and tweaking these plus you get a 10% discount and free shipping from Polk on things like tweeters. Ed

Well done, sir! ApplauseApplause
You remind me of me!Cool
PM me about the NAD gear, I have M-1.0t's...emwink.gif

That's the deal of the century Mark! The speakers alone, if all of the drivers work, are worth about a grand. A Pair of 1.2TL's like that go for $500 if they aren't functional at all! I don't know anything about the NAD gear though.

What a score! Congratulations.

My biggest find was a pair of Dynaco a25s on the sidewalk.

No one will beat my JBL C-60 Soverigns for $50. S8R three ways. Got $3600 for them.

What a great score!! I can't tell you how many times I hear of people making amazing scores at estate sales. Usually the rest of the family members don't know the value and honestly don't care, just want the stuff gone so they don't have to deal with it. I have tried going to a few estate sales in my time, but just haven't had much luck. Like the best thing going has been a "gently" used Sonicare toothbrush!!

Looks like others have already posted the upgrade links I am aware of. If you decide to go that route keep us posted along the way.
