Welcome to the site!!, Barry said it - "[The Force] is strong with this one." You are at the right place, Jim. Lots of help here. Some TFM 45's just changed hands here recently, you would have got sucked under that bridge, if I read your post right. That's quite a line-up you have on the way. OCCD is "Obsessive-compulsive Carver Collecting Disease." We all have it. We don't care anymore, we just share the needle (keep those pointing to the right) and take solace in the support group here.

Sad and tragic. Great music gone, and a true loss of creativity that we can't afford to lose in a world of so much mediocrity. RIP, Chris Cornell.

What are the best sounding Simon&Garfunkul records?
AndrewJohn replied to stevenlevel's topic in Vinyl
I do the same, Z. Right now, I have 3 bins to go through that the lady just wanted out of her house..., garage sale deal of her and her father's collection of recognized and other not so recognized but interesting artists - many new to me, I'm guessing about 600 LPs. Some LP's I want, others will become the property of Goodwill industries. Oh, yes, and in these bins, there are a dozen S&G records, not yet evaluated... One thing I don't do is donate ruined or damaged records. They go to the trash. Some record stores Ultrasonic Clean their inventory before putting them out for sale. I think that makes a huge difference in preparing a used record for successful play. One record shop out of Rockford that shows up at more local record swap meets, and for $2 to $5, they have not let me down yet - I'm not sure if they u/s clean, or not. -

Just a simple newbie question

Welcome to the site, Neptuneslair. You have clearly been bitten by OCCD (Obsessive Carver Collecting Disorder)..., And yours could be one of the first documented case of the affliction before you made your first acquisition!! Lots of good advice. Take your time, you're still young and have lots of time to enjoy the music. Welcome! -

Liking those Elacs. I heard the Elac speaker line at Axpona, for the first time last month. I have 2 or 3 vintage Elac turntables..., but never experienced their current focus on speakers 'till that Axpona encounter. Very nice! -

Super Welcome, PhilDent. Thinking of "Dent" I jump to Richard Dent, the Chicago Bears Hall of Famer... and 1985 Superbowl MVP... This is the place, and PhilDent is a suitable nom de plume A double entendre is that many "restored" carver units need a few dents-fill-ed (or gently pounded out). Looking forward to your photo-story of Carver. There is a good tech on this site that is NorCal (East Bay). He might pop up. He did my C-1 BillD mod. Super guy, too - like all the techs here are. his nom de plume is "wrf" I don't know what his workload is, but just thinking out loud since you asked the question. -

Best anti-static record sleeves? (MoFi vs Diskeeper vs others)
AndrewJohn replied to stevenlevel's topic in Vinyl
For me, I could be inviting more risk, I don't know. But, I'm cheap. My rationale:I try to comprehend the static charge introduced by walking across the carpet to get a record off the shelf and touching the record. Add the static introduced by the dryness of the air, and the wool sweater I have on as I move my arms, and any number of factors that can introduce a charge on the LP. How much does the sleeve impact that? How is the sleeve impacting the charge on the vinyl, sitting on the shelf, in the jacket - when all these other factors exist? I don't know, but I just don't see a sleeve zeroing out all the static charge that is introduced in the process. I use these from Sleeve City. Link HERE. They are 22 cents a peice (10.95 for 50). I like the round corners for getting in and out of the jacket. They seem to be the closest (and reasonably priced) to the original. And, like Z, I typically spend between $2 and $5 an LP. When I go to an LP event on a weekend, I pick up a few that invariably need to have their inner sleeve replaced - and these are close to the original. -

Why are paper sleeves bad? What am I missing? To date, I've avoided the extra expense... always thought they were snake-oil. I trust you guys - educate me. -
Thank you, as well for the pay-it-forward karma. (PP donation to the site to keep the Karma chain going.)

That is a rare sighting! Almost tempting enough to go "look at them" and test them with an amp and source..., just to experience them. Too far away for that.

I see all these points as consistent and coexisting. Diversity in our interests, and expressing them on the forum is good. I (try) to keep a low profile..., but am pretty out there by some people's standards. I'm good with that. I also like experiencing the wide variety of perspectives and opinions, and the discussions that occur. Very cool to see perspectives like those coming in from Brazil, Italy, Russia, and other global points, too. Rock On!!

There's nothing like getting LP's organized. The satisfaction of completing the task, the wonder of realizing how many LPs we have, and of course, the WAF improvement! I have a few of the Ikea version of these too, in a couple 4x4 modules. I hang mine up off the floor, from custom brackets I built to screw them into studs and support the weight of LP's. My trick is to use a 13 inch section of those 99cent swimming "noodle" kids toy in the back to keep them aligned to the front edge of the shelf, and protected.

Welcome, SPb-Stan. As you know, there's a lot of reasons to be here - our "stories" so to speak. Would love some pics (we love pics here) from your SF days and running a shop out there in the "biz.", if you have and can scan them... History is a good way to paint that picture with images. I lived in the Bay area back then - and a lot of today's members lived there then, and now - some of us may have crossed paths? Tell us a little more, and pics..., Welcome!
