Sometimes when I use the Zero stat near the TT or phono amp, I can hear it through the speakers. That tells me something, but I don't know what.

Just ordered "Requiem for the Americas" by Jon Anderson from Amazon. Really didn't know that there was an album of it. It is a sit in the dark and listen sort of experience for me. Combines the talents of Jon Anderson and others with Native American. I do know that the recording has some very catching air to it, and I remember once that a dancer was at my feet, shaking a rattle while the music played. Moving piece to be sure.

A good many years ago, I remember an evaluation that my boss gave to me. One sentence stood out. "Greg always has a better way of doing things". It was meant in a negative way, but I smiled instead. No, I really don't have better way all the time, but special circumstances are not always covered by the many volumes of books that we had at our disposal. Bob wrote new books and that always raises the hair on the back of the neck of those who have stuck to traditional wisdom. I have noticed this in most every field, but most interestingly in the scientific community. Play by the (our) rules or you don't get to eat lunch with the rest of us.

Chicago VII will always be one of my all time favorites.

I believe that lonerT had a pair of the LS50's and liked them. I have heard positive and negative about them, so it would be a matter of taste.

You're gonna have to teach me to paint like that.

Your right on track in my book. Used equipment is usually the best idea. I might have second thoughts about turntables and sometimes speakers though. Welcome to this site, and don't forget to post some good photos of your system.

A little surprise came in today. A sealed album of Synergy Cords by Larry Fast. You see, I got a good price on the first album and it came in warped more than I am. So, it was just easier to order another at $11, and it is so worth it. NO surface noise, no ski slopes for the stylus to maneuver, and the recording sounds just fine. This experience could lead to better things.

Yah, and those semi-autos that have no kick, and are completely accurate at amazing distances. Did you know, that if someone is shooting at you, all that is required for you to be safe is to tip over a lounge table to hide behind?
-
This may seem off topic but it points directly at safety issues. I'll get right to it>> In so many cases, I can think safety actually being the fault to begin with. Working outside, 'they' wanted us to wear safety goggles. You know, the ones that steamed up immediately, no matter the outside temp? Then there were the 3 layers of gloves for high voltage work. 1) cotton 2) rubber gloves over that 3) leather gloves over that! Go ahead, try to use your hands in a meaningful way to work now. The old high voltage testers. The gunsight method was preferred so that you might see the test light pop just as you touched the work being tested. ALL of these were inherently dangerous! BUT they satisfied the experts. That 3rd wire may or may NOT be needed for the application. >>>>>>>>>>>>>> "Ground is ground the world around" One of the biggest lies told to us.
-
It has always been a compulsion in me to get things 'right' as I can whether or not it makes a difference. When working for the phone company, we were taught to wire and work so that our product would have a useful life of 40+ years. That is one thing, but not just the work, but also the product should be as strong. Whether or not it makes a difference I am less willing to say except that it will not be a thing to point at. When raising my kids, I told them that their successes or failures should not ever be due to lack of effort. When it concerns upgrades and the like it is as much about pride as it might be about sound. I'll likely not change.

Listened to Terri Gross interview Paul. Was no surprise, but it kinda stood out how Paul mentioned John and George repeatedly but only once in the interview mentioned Ringo>> "Ringo brought us all together". He was being polite.

Suggestions for replacement woofer Acoustic Research AR-1 Hi Res
4krow replied to maskinisten's topic in Loudspeaker repair
Yup, were pullin' drivers. Investigation is a given. It gives you a chance to take a look around inside, so that is half the fun. Hoping that everything is accessible. I am up with the idea of checking for air leaks, and possibly bracing the cabinet. I don't think that speaker magnets can be out of alignment so easily, yet when it comes to age of the suspension, that is another matter. Hope that you will take some good, in focus shots for us. -

You might take a close look at the drivers surround material. Not always easy to catch, but possible there is a rip. -
"Amused to Death" has been my latest addition to the vinyl collection. Just listened this afternoon for the first time. Yes, it is everything that PF fans love. Incredible to me is the bass that is in the music. I rarely like bass this much. It is usually a thump session, but not here. Tonally speaking, it goes all the way down, making me wonder if a train was near, and then in the mid and upper bass, the pitch and definition was some of my favorite listening.

Tomorrow, when the UPS guy gets here, I will be listening to 'Amused to Death'. Right up my alley

That's just it Brian, until a cartridge is rightly mounted in your system TT, you will not know what to think. The lower priced Stanton, Shure, and AKG cartridges surprised me in comparison to the more expensive Grado and others as well. Does anyone remember the ad that Empire put out many years ago that showed a record being held by a pencil in the center hole, and a hand holding the cartridge to the record? (The pencil was held by the other hand). It read, "This is all we are trying to do, but accurately."

here are quite a few to choose from over the years but I remember something from way back made by Dynavector. I think the model was 10X20 and was red in color. I have owned more expensive and different, but not as detailed and just right for me.

Well, as you know, there is not a better time to send vinyl through the mail system than the month of July. Records come to your door completely sanitized, maybe even Simonized and ready to hang on the wall. Yup, likely that's what they will be good for folks. Today I heard the freshly cleaned records spun onto my doorstep, screaming as they spun to a stop. "Ah, the MM has arrived." Some were wet with tears and making a frowny face as I took them from their slipcovers. Good 'ole BS&T, side two was first to be spun. By now they are used to it, Right? I have always loved this recording and performance. This time I can say without hesitation, this record sounded no worse than before it was cleaned. It wasn't until the last third of the album that I got excited. Real reason is, the equipment had warmed up enough to do it's magic. Tried a hundred times, putting an album on and playing it, but there comes a certain point that it loses it's flatness. Interesting thing that happens now is that I am hearing a bit better, the details I once knew were there to begin with. As my ears age much of that detail has been lost, or so I thought. This mission into vinyl will likely be the last of my good and realistic stereo experience, and I am doing a lot more in the way of gear and albums to hear the best that I can until I can't. Is this cleaning to the ultimate worth the price? Dunno. I have only heard one side of one album. Stay tuned music lovers. Same Libera chi time, same Libera chi station.

Remember, the popping is occurring even when he is not near the system, as mentioned early on in this thread. -

I am chuckling to myself, as I forget to do these very things in my system every now and then, and an annoying pop occurs. >>>>>>That annoying pop is not what is being described here. If it is as you describe about this popping, with no notice, BIG popping TIMES 10, then yes, stop right there and get it to a shop or figure out how to stop this from happening (if that is even possible). -

You will get all kinds of advice on this popping thing. So far, I see that you have isolated it to the new component. In my own experience, very loud popping like what you have described came from a power amplifier with a defective IC in the input. It gave no warning of any kind, and just 'went off' when it dam well pleased. I suspect at least as serious of a malfunction is what your dealing with as well. I DON'T think that a dirty pot or something like that is the issue here. Yes, they can and do make noise, popping included, but what you are describing is a startling explosive event. Wish that I had some advice about the other preamp and it's tone control problem. I will think on it awhile. Will have to have some in depth trouble shooting I'm afraid. -
If you even skim through this paper, you will find great information for record care. Good to vacuum them, that is true, but also to clean them from the chemicals that were used during pressing, and the build up of debris. I am too stupid to compress the paper to the right size for this forum to accept it, so you will have to go to 'The Vinyl Press' to get it. It is worth every minute of the time you spend even browsing through the paper, I promise. The photos alone are not what you might expect to see. Vinyl playback uses a microscopic medium, forever understated as to the minimum care needed.

It's pretty easy to go deep with this stuff, but I can't/don't want to help it. I enjoy the crap out of messing with stuff just to hear, or not, a difference or improvement. Gotta get me one of those Tesla coils and tame some harsh CD's with it some day.
